Senet – Redux

One of the first things I posted here about was the Ancient Egyptian Game of Senet

My Nephew recently got himself a 3D printer. He was asking if there was anything people needed to print (For a nominal fee), so I sent him the 3D files for Senet. He brought it to school today and I am really excited.

Reportedly Senet is the oldest known board game, more than 3,000 years old. It disappeared for centuries before being rediscovered in the 1930s. And by rediscovered I mean they actually found a set. Before that, they had references to it in scrolls, pictures in burial murals, and many many references all from the ancient world.

The complete original rules have been lost. That’s natural. The game went out of fashion to be played 2500 years ago, and documentation ages and crumbles. However, enough was found in the many references that historians were able to put together a couple of sets of rules. Each only slightly different from each other. (Like I said there was enough of the original rules discoverable.)

See Senet is supposed to be a boardgame representation of the flow from living to the underworld. With your death happening at space 26. (On my original board it was shown with a bird, on this 3d Set it is 3 storks.)

After that if you have done well, you move down the river into the afterlife, and if not, you are reincarnated back at space 15 (The Eye of Ra). These rules were created by Dr. Timothy Kendall.

However, the other popular set of rules was made by R.C. Bell. In these rules, the specially marked spaces were simply safe spaces. On these spaces you could not be attacked by the opponent.

I will not re-write all of the rules. You can check out my original post about it

However, I will post the printable rules sets for you.

Have Fun Playing!
