I was going back through my other Personal Blog, and I found a post that had been on “Draft” since April 2020. I am moving it over here where it belongs.
Board Games
Last night I was packing up my board games and thinking of my other two hoards. You see I have a stash of games in my storage unit in Canada, a stash of games in my house in the Philippines and a stash of games in my apartment in China.
Why so many games? You might ask. Well when I was just a kid, I had a Great Uncle Ross who lived not too far away. Uncle Ross had this game room in the basement that he had set up for his daughter, and when she grew up, for us.
I’m sure that the games where not as many as my memory makes them out to be. But I remember him having a whole wall of shelves filled with boardgames. All sorts of games. Common games like Clue, and older games like pick-up-sticks. There was ker-plunk, and hungry hippos.
He had so many games, and I used to love visiting him to play. My brothers and I would go downstairs for hours at a time. I remember laughing and smiling with them because of these games.
When I was a teenager, I started playing Dungeons and Dragons, and really enjoyed that game, but as I grew older and traveled, I realized that it was too difficult to find people willing to play that. And too time consuming to set up and explain.
I still enjoy table top RPGs, but prefer the grab and go freedom that boardgames give. I promised myself that when I had kids, that I would make sure that they had boardgames to play.
Now each week at least once we have a family boardgame afternoon. All of us (except for my youngest who is napping at that time) sit down with no devices and play. It is a great way to relax and enjoy time together.
My current hobby includes researching ancient board games and making them, or designing new games for my family and I to play. Eventually I would love to have all my games together and make a game library that would make my Uncle Ross proud.
